Since the time of King Ludwig 1st of Bavaria, scientist and paint technologists in Germany have been perfecting mineral paints. The king was a great fan of the lime fresoes found in northern Italy, thanks to their bright colours and vivid look. However, the materials used in the Italian sunshine didn't suit the climate of Bavaria so well. As Bavaria was a centre of research into Water Glass (potassium silicate), it wasn't long before enterprising chemists were mixing in pigments to emulate the Italian range of colours but with a more resistant surface.
Eventually, this research resulted in the successful mixing of wat er glass and mineral pigments, creating a surface coating that offered all the brilliant colours which so impressed the King in Italy, but also and perhaps more importantly, thanks to silification, the process forming the bond between the binding agent and the substrate, giving a durable surface that resists chipping, peeling and cracking, even in harsh conditions.
